Singing bowls have been used for centuries in meditation and healing practices. Here's how to get started with your own bowl.
What Is a Singing Bowl?
A singing bowl is a type of bell that produces a rich, resonant tone when struck or circled with a mallet. The sound and vibrations are believed to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and deepen meditation.
Choosing Your Bowl
Size: Smaller bowls (4-4.5 inches) produce higher, brighter tones and are easy to hold. Larger bowls (6+ inches) create deeper, more sustained tones that fill a room.
Material: Metal bowls (typically brass or bronze alloys) produce the classic rich harmonics. Each bowl is unique due to the hand-hammering process.
Mallet: A suede-wrapped mallet produces softer, warmer tones. Wooden mallets create brighter, sharper sounds.
How to Play
Striking: Gently strike the bowl's rim with your mallet. Let the tone ring out and fade naturally. A well-made bowl can sustain a tone for 30-45 seconds.
Rimming: Hold the mallet vertically against the bowl's outer rim. Move it slowly in a circular motion with consistent pressure. The bowl will begin to sing as the vibration builds.
Incorporating Into Your Practice
Start your meditation by striking the bowl once and focusing on the sound as it fades. Use the tone as an anchor for your attention. You can also rim the bowl continuously for ambient sound during longer sessions.
Caring for Your Bowl
Wipe with a dry cloth after use. Avoid water or cleaning solutions. Store in a dry place with the cushion ring to prevent scratches. With proper care, a quality singing bowl can last a lifetime.
