Choosing a yoga mat might seem straightforward, but the right mat can significantly impact your practice. Here's what to consider:
Material Matters
Natural rubber offers excellent grip and cushioning, making it ideal for hot yoga and vigorous practices. It's durable but heavier than synthetic options.
TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer) is lightweight, making it perfect for travel. It provides decent grip and is free from latex and PVC.
Cork is naturally antimicrobial and provides excellent grip when slightly damp — ideal for hot yoga practitioners who want a sustainable option.
Thickness and Cushioning
Standard mats are about 4-5mm thick. If you have sensitive joints or practice restorative yoga, look for thicker options (6mm+). For balance-focused practices like Iyengar, thinner mats provide better ground connection.
Grip and Texture
Textured surfaces provide better traction, especially important for poses like downward dog where your hands might slip. Natural rubber and cork both offer superior grip compared to smooth PVC mats.
Size Considerations
Most mats are 24 inches wide and 68 inches long. If you're taller than 5'8", consider a 72-inch mat. Extra-wide options (26 inches) give more room for sprawling poses.
Our Recommendation
For daily practice, we recommend natural rubber for its durability and grip. For travel, a TPE mat is lighter and easier to carry. Whatever you choose, invest in quality — a good mat should last years, not months.
